The Ballerina

The ballerina - Watch out for her in the first edition of "Absinthe". Since I haven't really been around, let me fill you in on what has been going on. I now have a fortnightly comic strip coming out every alternate Saturday in the Saturday supplement of the Indian Express. Its called 'Marcus and more' and you can read some of the strips here (Marcus and More). Also if you haven't been following my doodle blog, I have several updates there. Doodles and character designs mostly.I've been adding more stuff to that blog than to this one of late.
The Children's book I'm illustrating for Hema should ideally be out in a month or two. Rosh is doing the colors for that one

I was reading Will Eisner's brilliant work, New York - The big city, and it inspired me into thinking why not document the unique things that happen around where I live, in what Rosh mockingly calls my Indo-French style :). Then i made a very long list of all the things that one gets to see only in the streets of Trivandrum, one of the Southernmost cities of India, and the homeland of yours truly.
So here I am, presenting to you all, Trivandrum - Life in the small city.

I am starting off with Matilda the "meenkaari" (Fish-seller), who is often seen trailing a long chain of cats as she goes from house to house selling the fish her husband had caught out in the sea. Once in a while, nagged by all the whining and purring, she tosses a small fish into the cloud of cats following her. Will be adding more to this post as time permits. Do check back! Took a break from penciling today and did this pin up for promotional purpose of our graphic novel. The theme, as I had mentioned earlier is urban fantasy with a hint of noir. But its too early to reveal anything about the story. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed about our final product. Hopefully, it will be completed by June. Dearest friends, watchers, visitors, and fellow artists... As you might have noticed, the posts to my Blog have been irregular of late and i know i owe you all an explanation. I have started working full-on on my Graphic novel "The Hatchet" (the name is gonna change, but lets just call it that for the time being coz i dont want to give away anything about the plot yet ;)). Penciling the panels takes up most of my time everyday. But I'll make it a point to do a few pin-ups during my free time now n then, which i will be updating in my gallery on DA. I have structured the script of the graphic novel as a trilogy. Hopefully we'll publish the first volume this year. The genre is urban-fantasy/thriller with a hint of noir and the storyline is something very fresh. Cant reveal anything more about it at the moment. I am quite satisfied with the progress iv made so far and i hope i wont be disappointing any of you when the final product comes out. For a while i was stuck in a deadlock since i had no idea how long its gonna take once i'm done penciling, inking, coloring, and letter the novel all by myself... Quite unrealistic, I realize...So iv been trying to figure out a style that would go without colors. But i didn't want my graphic novel to look like anything that is already out there in the market (I know that is quite too much to ask for this early in my career as a graphic novelist).. Thanks to my talented friend Sinu, life has become simpler again. He has expressed his willingness to be part of the process and has agreed to do the inking and coloring of my pages, which is quite something considering his tight schedule. Let me also express my heartfelt gratitude to my dearest buddy Rosh and my better-half Merryn ... without their support and encouragement, i would never have been brave enough to set out on this journey

Took a break while doing a piece n ended up watching few of those MAD tv spoofs on Stevan segal flicks...and in turn ended up doing this one. Tried picturing Stevey playing my character "the vagabond"

Now here is one dude you should be careful enough not to piss off...SSSsuperman!! ...penciled and inked traditionally, colored digitally.

Finally got to watch Hellboy 2: The golden Army. I'v been experimenting with different styles to find out an optimum style for doing a completely noir comic. This one is ..i’d say 94% traditional... The only “digital intervention” is the pattern and a bit of contrast correction. The rest of it is plain ol’ ink and brushes. Had fun making those splotches using a tooth brush and Rotoring ink :D

Today I had a trip down La Rue Nostalgia… When I was a lil kid I used to frequent this hill that my dad had inherited, and my frequent companion during these trips was Bobbie, my Granpa’s Daschunt. Bobbie was a whole 7 months elder to me and was more like a protective elder sister to me. We used to spend hours together watching birds.. Ye, u heard right.. Bobbie used to love watching em as much as I did..coz everytime a swallow flew by, her head would follow it..Gone is our lil hill now and so is She. Dad had to sell off the hill to raise money to purchase some plot in the city (DARN!!) and They sent Bobbie to “the happy farm” when I was about 10 yrs old. But the memories still live. So today’s piece of art is dedicated to Both my childhood and my very first friend… Bobbie, I still love you and I will always do

Finally watched the Hellboy movie. Nope not the second.. the first one.. Yeah, its shameful, but true..I hadn’t watched it all these years. But now that the mission has been accomplished, I decided to warm up today by sketching my very own version of Hellboy… and guess wot??...I ended up spending a good 3.5 hours on it!!! Had to try my new Rotoring Isograph 0.3 pen on this one..and it turned out satisfactory. Still haven’t started reading Mike Mignola’s graphic novels though :( … I know I know…sounds like I’m living under a rock here…but I sure have seen many of his artwork.. Ive also been inspired by Reuben Martinez version of the red dude! just u wait!!..I’l be getting ma hands on the graphic novels in a day or two!! Down here is the inked version of him

This one started off as a warm up before staring my work today but I ended up spending about an hour and a half on it. Had this image of agent 47 in ma head for a while. Though the movie lacked the punch, I did quite enjoy playing the games. The original idea was to make the lighting even more minimal – almost a silhouette and with the cityscape in the background, but got carried away with a couple o details and finally decided to keep it the way it turned out. I have started working on my comic book and the am gonna be busy with it for a while. But I’l be uploading warm up sketches and speed-paintings in the meantime

I dedicate this warm up to the two brilliant movies - Requiem for a dream, and Trainspotting..Also this is my first experiment with Indian ink and a 000 fine brush. Rosh is here and is inspiring me heavily to get back on the track I belong! This is day-1 of our 4-day creative workshop and I'm totally loving it.. And heyyy..I resigned from my job at McKinsey yesterday. So here I am, warming up for the big battle ahead!

Okay!!..bring it on!!. now all the Frank Miller fans are gonna gang up against me for portraying the dark knight like this as opposed to his much darker and realistic version. C'mon, guys..its just a stylization. I really dont intend to kill the guy's personality :) .. Just wanted to try the Mr. Incredible kinda anatomy on him. I probably would have chosen a similar style if i were to illustrate one of the batman graphic novels, though. Who doesnt want variety?. Hez still got the right attitude, doesnt he?? Here i am, after a long break which I was forced to take. My health had gone for a complete toss due to over-stress.. The doc had advised me to refrain from using the comp for a while.. Now i am up and kicking again!!.. Decided to start off with some real medium - ball pen, water color, and crayons!.... The first one is my version of the central character of an upcoming graphic novel. I will be handling the script, and Sinu will be doing the artwork... roughed this one up in a hotel room while on vacation in B'lore.. Cant reveal anything more about the project at the moment. And then we have Mr. Undead walking the cold night. Just a random character design using ball point pen and crayons ...ME IS BACK!!!

Out there, is my alter ego, - the regular guy doing a regular, boring, secure job. But once i don my creative gear, i get transformed into this superhero who saves the day by sketching, visualizing, creating dreamworlds.. The amount of physical n emotional strength that the two parallel lives keep demanding of me has started exceeding more than what i can handle. My body and mind give me warning signals.. Had this image in my head ever since i first read White Fang as a kid. Raised in an indian settlement among hunting dogs, White Fang grows up becoming more savage, morose, solitary, and a deadly fighter, ....the enemy of his kind. Unable to get along with the 'pack', he decides to walk alone, hunt alone, and live alone.
Decided to do this one 100% digitally, in photoshop. Started with sketching out the silhouette, and added the highlights layer by layer ...garnished it with the snow and fog

Time-travel is impossible.. time is not a place. You cannot go from one time to another like u go from Delhi to New York. Only space can be traveled. By that I mean that there are infinite parallel universes of different time periods existing in the same space at the same time. So right now, you are being born at your birth place…right now you are getting married somewhere else,..and right now u are breathing your last in yet another place. But only beings of the same time period can witness these
If u can cross over in space from one parallel dimension to another, you can literally "time-travel"

The story is about Kean, who finds himself in a parallel universe lit up by fireflies, somewhere deep below the earth. His only companion in this world is his dog Luthor. Fishing is the only way they can feed themselves. But how did he get here in the first place?..Will he ever be able to see the outside world?.. What dangers lurk in these sub-terrain swamps?.. As he seeks answers to these questions, more and more about this strange world and the phenomenon of “space-travel” is revealed to us…

One-day movie making (first cut)

My first shot at live action movie making. Was on a really really tight deadline. Wrote the screenplay in half an hour, shot the whole film in less than two hours, with ma colleagues, and the editing and sound mixing was done overnight using Sony vegas, a software i hadnt even seen before (my premier ditched me for some reason n kept givin me some crappy error message...i guess that explains why the audio track is messed up). Its actually a spoof on how things go inside ma office when a job arrives outta the blue, like mannah from heaven on a jobless boring day..So it might be a lil difficult for the outsiders to make complete sense out of it :) .. Of late, iv been cogitating on how to sexify Dad’s ol Fiat. Right now it’s a piece o’ junk on wheels!! N this is what I came up with – metallic two-tone body, a new 1.38 D engine, an air inlet on da bonnet , racer stripes. I do have some ideas regarding the interior as well. Gonna make it a two-seater with maroon leather upholstery. The back seat is gonna have to be removed to accommodate a powerful audio system, and to increase the leg-room in da front. The shitty handling can be fixed with a power steering. Wait!!...as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words..will sketch it out n post it here soon!

Amethyst is a very manga inspired design of mine. Had a crush on Night Elves back in good ol’ school days, when I used to spend hours playing Warcraft III, invading Orc territories. This is my tribute to the immortal race of night elves. Now why do I call her Amethyst?.. because of the color of her skin. And besides, amethyst is my birth-stone as well :)
This huntress dwells in the woods, rises with the moon, and hunts with the wolves. With her lagomorphic ears, and acute sense of smell, she can sense you coming from a mile away. She is the sole survivor of the race that perished when Archimonde destroyed the World Tree (thanks to the little sapling that she planted as a child in a cave in the woods). Nobody knows of her existence, except a few wisps …and me, of course! But in case the Orcs succeed in discovering her, she is all set to wipe them all out with no mercy. In short, she is the goddess of the night and she prefers to be left alone. So if you see two eyes with bright silvery glow focusing on you from the dark, understand that this is the type of girl your mamma warned you about, and run for your life

I've decided to take Zid’s evolution a step further. So what u see here is Zid X-treme Ver. 1.0 (Giving room for more evolution, if needed). Replaced his blonde hair with green hair (yup, Rosh, I know u are gonna be happy here) and he is a lot more simplified, with fewer lines on him.

Down there, you can see how he looked before getting colored and highlighted. Below that is another extreme version of the colored render ..didnt bother to finish that one, though(Just for the heck of it!!.. was a bit bummed out today..consider that an attempt to de-bum myself :D)

Zid – The Evolution

THE PRELUDE – ZID SPEAKS AGAIN: “Sound is something that was there right from the beginning. It all started with the ‘Big Bang’ – the enormous explosion that gave birth to the universe. What existed before that? only The Creator knows… The Creator – God, as we called him – is that ultimate source of benevolent energy without which, even science agrees, the Big Bang could not have been possible. But what happened to sound after the Big Bang? How far did it travel through the cosmic chaos, before it realized that it wasn’t strong enough yet to control the universe it had just given birth to?... How long did it wait till it decided to make plans to quench its lust for power and control? Nobody knows. Music is one of its forms that appealed to the race that dominated the universe…That has to be the reason why it chose to use man’s growing addiction to music for gaining control…And now, after millions of years’ planning and hard work, when sound has almost attained invincibility, it has all the reasons to be pissed if one man decides to wreck it all… And I have all the reasons to freak out when that one man happens to be me… But I gotta keep my cool. Not for the sake of mankind, but for that of my style.”

In compliance with popular requests, here is a leaner, more ectomorphic version of Zid…Its amazing to look back at all those different phases through which Zid evolved.. It all began during the end of 2004, when I was a 3D-animation trainee in Toonz India. We hadn’t yet stepped into 3D from 2D when we surprised the crowds with our first action sequence in 2D . What made our lil’ movie clip special was the 3D like camera rotation shots in mid-air. The movie was made in the traditional 2D way-all hand drawn, with me doing the key frames, Rosh , the special effects like explosions n stuff and Ajeesh, the IB. It came out pretty well and the viewers fell in love with the lean, energetic action hero. Yup , u guessed right…that was Zid’s debut!.. And most important of all, he brought us together. We could see that we had amazing working chemistry, and we decided that we should do more

Our first commercial project was a 2 minute long 3D demo reel, for Berchnova 2005. At the time of submission of the project we had to come up with a name for our company. We were too tired after the sleepless night to rack our brains. So we just settled for Zid animations pvt. Ltd., and our trade-mark was this 20-something guy with blond spiked hair, black goatee, and goggles

Later, when more comrades joined hands with us to form our Mirchiz Studio, Zid evolved into a Rock star having a split personality disorder, with a talking guitar (Cracko) for his side kick. What we had in mind was a series of funny music videos feat. Zid. But we were always busy with other projects (Rex and Sha, Entrapment, Pa-Lee….to name a few) and eventually Zid got pushed away to the back of our minds.

He surfaced again during mid-2006 in the form of an adventurer (with the same old goatee, but longer black hair and sporting a skull-cap), on a quest to find the ‘Diamond of Fortune’. But he couldn’t get to grab enough attention, let alone the DoF.. coz by then, we had decided to shelf Mirchiz studios for the time being and go in our own separate ways

Right now, when me and my mates are in different parts of the globe, leading our own separate lives, Zid has returned to unite us again….as a more realistic new avatar. What we have in mind now is a race against sound through a series of graphic novels with Zid in the lead role. Lets see how things go this time :) … IOU, dude!!!.. Big time !

Now let’s take a closer look at Zid’s face. .. He is definitely not the typical square-jawed, milk drinking hero with that “I chew titanium nuggets for breakfast”- look on his face. (nope, Clark Kent..i don’t mean to offend you…that goes for you too, Bruce Wayne).Zid has a lil’ bit of the bad guy in him. His faint shade of grey shows on his skin.. His eyes reveal both intelligence and vulnerability.. He is not the kinda dumb hunk who acts spontaneously all the time.. He is more like that one man among every hundred who reasons with himself before taking a decision.. If he decides to be spontaneous, there would be a reason behind that too. His left eyeball has been replaced with a sonodrome-A highly sophisticated gadgets that is used for seeing sound waves in their “core-form” (We shall see more about the core form of sound waves later. For now, just know that every tune can be personified to its core form. we see it, interact with it and communicate with it through a sonodrome)- which helps him keep an eye always open for monstrous stray tunes that keep trying to haunt him every now and then. He doesn’t have a very chiseled nose typical of the marvel heroes (now don’t say that his nose looks like mine.. any resemblance is purely coincidential ;-))Pierced left ear-lobe .. goatee…and last but not the least, his hair is the only thing that is more rebellious than he is…. I know that he looks a lil’ too realistic right now.. gotta stylize him more…but this is only the beginning.. U will get to know quite a lot more about this cool and self-assured new age hero, as he evolves.. And what about the plot? its too early to disclose that here… All in good time!!…
